I Need A Simple, Free, Temporary Website Template

Posted by telemoxie on 500 Points
I'm starting a new project, and I need to have a very basic starter website. no e-commerce, very few pictures, no bells and whistles, no mailing list, no blog. Just something very simple.

I'm looking for just one template, not 50.

I have essentially no experience with HTML. I already have the domain, and I definitely want to avoid any form of advertising on this site.

My guess is I may end up with a total of five pages. Any suggestions?

What you need to do is install the wordpress platform - or any other of your choice. I use "bolt" because it's by a mate of mine in den Haag. It's still in the development phase, so if you don't mind a few quirks you'll be fine with it. https://bolt.cm

Wordpress is okay, but the support is appalling. Usually when you have a problem they tell you "go hire" which as you can imagine isn't the sort of thing that'll get you to trust them!

For a simple site, Wordpress is pretty easy. There are loads - way too many in my opinion - of templates and plugins. For a basic site template you should go to https://arcsin.se who have some fantastic templates that you can install with little trouble. Many of them are free, and being Swedish are really cool.

For stats, make sure you've got Google analytics on board (essential) and you can get plugins for server-side stats through counterize - and I believe that Logaholic has a plugin too. Their service is excellent. Again, they're mates only from Amsterdam this time. https://logaholic.com (I think). Don't forget the amazing Yoost plugin by Joost de Valk (who I don't know but is Dutch).

Do you need an email autoresponder? Aweber is pretty good, or if it's just a newsletter you need, mailchimp is free - but any sequential stuff needs to be paid for. Again, look up their plugins for wordpress. Plugins are all point and click stuff, no html or css or anything like that - you'll need your membership codes and that sort of thing though.

One warning with wordpress: switching between the wisiwig and their code interfaces wipes some formatting. It's the only one that does this, and flummoxes no few people (including me).

    Does this help any?

If you're looking for something easy/basic to throw together (for now), consider: https://www.weebly.com/
Here's also a brief comparison of various website builders: https://www.websitebuilderexpert.com/wix-vs-weebly-vs-squarespace-vs-jimdo/

    I second Jay's suggestion of Weebly https://www.weebly.com/

You might also want to consider Yola: https://www.yola.com/

I would investigate https://www.wix.com/ ... Free sites and if you are near one of their lounges, free face to face guidance.

    Another option is https://squarespace.com
