Desperate Need Of Naming Suggestions!

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Help! I am in a pickle! I have been racking my brain for months and cannot seem to get enough creative juice flowing after my projects to think of a name for my business.... I am needing to create business cards and what not now so I can start up.... Here are the facts:

Small home based business
Handmade items geared towards expectant mothers/new mothers. Also offering novelty items for children ie: bibs, hats, shirts.

I also offer diaper cakes.

Heat press is something I use often.

Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

    How about "Nine Months Novelty"?

You're not alone in your troubles - I've been through it, so have a few other questioners on this forum. More to the point, it's where creativity hits a wall.

So: you're making and selling handmade items for mums and mums to be. Now these aren't going to be your best market, my experience of that time was of being too busy to do anything but keep ends met. Afterwards - and for the next decade - was a blur. Now their mums, sisters, aunts - there's a market for you. My guess is that whilst the market is thick with competition, few will have thought this one through as far as this.

So now you've got an idea of who you're aiming at. More important to you is to look at your business from their perspective. You're offering something that nobody else can, and it's a time that's special enough that money is a small consideration. Now as importantly, when it comes to someone else having a baby, it's all wonderful - for me this is your theme. This audience has the time, enthusiasm and some money to invest in their nearest and dearest.

Okay, that's me in your space - as it were.

https://nearest-and-dearest.com is available as a domain name. It would also do rather nicely for your biz, as this is the one thing on their mind!

What do you think? If you have other ideas, please share them; I'm more than happy to go the extra mile as long as you can keep up!

PS Remember that a business name is for everyone else. You're always called by your Christian (given) name, the number of times you think of yourself by your own name is very small indeed.

I really like both of your suggestions. This is why I have struggled so much as I want it to be a memorable name.... I had a thought of Nuks&Fannies..... but of course I don't reckon I can use it.... I am hoping that someone can help me with that "ah-ha" moment! I would like something catchy if at all possible :-)

Don't fuss about the "catchy" - the simple taglines that are sensibly descriptive really do catch the eye. More importantly, the tagline needs to attract the attention of your customers, not you. That's darned hard to get right, there are ways - more important is what your customers think.

I'm going to build on the nuks line - not the fannies. Done that bit.

    dearestnuks.com
    nearestnuks.com
    newnuks.com
    handmadenuks.com

are all available. do any of these sing to you?

I was using it as an extension of the addage nooks and crannies type thing... sometimes you find the best stuff where you never thought to look type thing....

I think I am struggling most as I dont necessarily want to commit the name specifically to baby items as I would ultimately like to offer other items such as items for bridal parties and life milestone type creations... I am so sorry for being difficult!

If you do eventually launch a bridal party and/or other services business brands, it would probably be best to create new distinctive names for each one. One strategy is to create an umbrella business name and then create each product/service category brand names as siblings of the parent brand.

Hang on a min! I'm more than happy with you being "difficult" - these boxes are small enough at the best of times. More to the point is to get this business up and running, get you making a profit. As far as I'm concerned that's where I can help right now. The other ideas can come later when you've got a lot more idea about what's going on - there's nothing to stop you having three business names.

I will put my mind to it, that's not a problem - it'll have to center on your handicrafts. I did look up flaminfortune, but the .com extension's taken ;-)

    Just a thought!

When it comes to something where you're going for several areas of the market - firstly be careful not to dilute your approach. ***Your strength is your originality in producing pretty presents*** - can you do custom designs from a photo? That too could be something? In any case the focus comes even closer to you: they wouldn't be in your style if you hadn't made them.

Sorry, it's really late here in Europe. I'm fallin' off of my perch. I know you're n a pickle, my brain's pickled!! I'll see if I ca n come up with something tomorrow - maybe one of the crew can help? G'night all.

Be the best in infants wear. Or be the best in bridal parties. But trying to have one company name cover both these niches might be a stretch.

As for Nuks and Fannies—I'm not seeing it. Nor will "catchy" save the day. Be relevant to your ideal buyer's needs and go from there. If you're trading solely online, carry out all due diligence and do your keyword homework.

Just to clarify: are you looking for an available domain name for your business-to-be, or simply a name you can put on flyers/business cards (with hopes of finding a matching domain in the indefinite future)?

Also: who specifically is likely to purchase from you? What age mom? Located where? Why buying from YOU? How will they find you?
