Steps To Get Fmcg Marketing Job

I've keen interest in FMCG Marketing. Is it fine to start with sales first and then move to marketing domain ? I'm afraid if my career ends up with sales domain. Do companies provide enough opportunities to sales people to work in marketing domain.

Why rely on a company to provide the opportunities? Why not make it your business to provide them yourself?

It depends on the company. Generally a good salesperson has a different skill set than a good marketing person, so it's not so common for that transition to occur. Successful sales people are usually action-oriented and eager to "kill something" (i.e., close a sale), while good marketing people tend to be more analytical and committed to testing, tracking and learning ... focused on building a strong, long-term, profitable brand franchise.

Of course there are exceptions, and there are companies where "marketing" really means "sales support."

I agree with Mgoodman - it depends on the company.

Some companies do want their marketing people to have worked in sales, as there is a lot that the person can learn about the customer from that experience.

But other companies also understand that good sales people and good marketing people have different skills, so don't look to sales as a source for marketing recruits. In these cases, your fear if very much warranted.
