Let's say you get a majority of people completing the survey liking the name/phrase. Does that mean it's the one that prospective customers will like? Unless you prequalify the survey respondents, you'll likely be led astray by your results.

Thank you for your suggestion. We're a startup and the product is of a technological nature. Therefore we have limited time and budget. Surveying the name will definitely give us some info valuable info, especially that the name and tagline are in english which is not our mother language. We want to avoid being cheesy or inapriopriat with the name. I'd be grateful for taking a look at the survey.

Why does anyone need this app? What market research on its usefulness and appeal have you carried out?

If you need an answer and have limited time and budget, then you should abandon the research and hire a professional who specializes in naming. If you make the wrong decision because your research methodology is flawed in some way, you may not get a second chance. Don't do that to yourself. Take the extra time and spend a little money to get it right.

It's clear you are excited about the project, but rushing into something as important as a name/tagline that communicates the essence of your product (or its benefit for the target audience) flies in the face of good business judgment and is almost disrespectful to the product concept itself.

Thank you Gary for your response. The survey is not to evaluate the usefullness of the product (not an app) itself but it's proposed name and tagline. I'd be really really gratefull for sharing your answers.

In response to your question- the device provides additional nonstandard, hard to break security for cars - that is for every car.

In terms of comfort it depends on the car you own.

For people with remotely controlled central locking - you don't reach into your pocket for keys when approaching the car. If you are shopping, carrying a child or live in a place where it rains a lot, that's when it comes especially handy.

The main target market for the device though are developing countries, where cars with central locking but no remote control are very popular- in case of these vehicles, the device becomes quite essential.

The group that the device is useless for comfort-wise are people who's cars are already fitted with proximity locks. They are left only with the security feature, therefore they're only a small margin of the customers and are not our target.

@mgoodman - thank you for your suggestion. The name and tagline were not created by me alone and was chosen out of number of propositions. Still, we have doubts, therefore i'd be grateful for filling in the survey :)

I completed the survey and left comments there. The name/tagline you've picked, in my opinion, isn't right for a couple of reasons -- as detailed in my comments.

    Hello,

I filled out your survey and posted the comments below in the last field:

"First problem I noticed - You will face a massive problem with spelling. Generally, if a name can be easily misspelled, it's not a good name. "Loxit" would be better.

Second problem - tagline. Especially the "blocks it" part. Sounds negative, like I may get blocked from my own car.

Also, the tagline uses the English pronoun "it", and your name ends in "et". This references the naming issue I mentioned above."

Of course, the spelling of the word "Lox" may be a problem, especially with bootstrapper branding budgets. But it can still work.

A name I thought of that may work well:

    ProxLox

To you, as a techie, "prox" may make you think of "proxy" and "proxy servers". To reg folks, "prox" is the beginning of one word: "proximity". So, "ProxLox" is exactly representative of what your product is: a proximity lock.

I also like proxit, loxit, autolox, autogenie, applock, applox, pocketlock

For a tagline, go with a benefit rather than an exact function. Try brainstorming stuff like:

Never worry about your car again

Keep your car in your pocket

Take control of your auto security

    Auto security You control

    Auto security controlled by you

    Put your car on autopilot

Since it also opens and closes doors (at least that is what your survey states), if that feature is your primary differentiator, your USP, then focus on the benefits of automatic doors.

You can go with all kinds of unique/funny ad campaign ideas. The first that comes to mind is playing off of dog training. You can do ads or use headlines in your promo material that circles around "training yor car to do everything...except roll-over", etc.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!
