Monetize Youtube Channel

Posted by pjd on 250 Points
I just learned that my son has a YouTube Channel of college football highlights that he has produced from vid clips from various sources, edited, and put to a soundtrack. Here are his stats:

22,054 subscribers
6,073,419 views
Joined May 2, 2012

His most recent vid generated almost 1.8M views since March 2014.

How do we monetize this? This is some serious traffic and he is on the 1st page of Google in the #1 spot for a specific search term.

I have been a "closet" developer for 20 years as a hobby.

Of course, YouTube already has ads posted on his vids. All of the material probably is copyright protected but his compilations, custom editing and the resulting production are not.

Ideas?

How's his ad revenue? Is that sufficient for his needs?
Can he get a sponsor for his videos (college football supplies, for example)?

YouTube will not let him monetize the videos he created as they contain trademarked content. They are serving ads on the channel but not connected to our Adsense account.

What is your son's goal for the channel? Is it to share his love of football or his video editing skills? Is there any additional value he can create for his subscribers? If he's not sure, use the comment area to develop a conversation with them.

By creating his own content based on his personality and his opinions of plays he won't have to breach anyone else's copyright. It may well be worth reaching out to spinors on a per episode-basis.

Sponsors, not spinors … sorry about that.
