Help! Google Not Listing Our Nonprofit Right

Posted by marjorieschustack on 500 Points
Our nonprofit has changed it's name. Our local business listing still has the old name and I cannot figure out how to change this on Google. So, when you google our new name it does not show up anywhere.

In addition, while we can change the url of our site to reflect the new brand, we will not be able to redesign and redo our content until April at the earliest (funding and time). I know this is not good. Any ideas on what should be prioritized. We have redirected so if you put in the new url it will be directed to our website.

Need help fast. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

In Google search for local listings there ought to be a tiny text link somewhere in the main search return that says: "Are you the business owner?"

Click this link and you ought to be able to update your address details. As for the issue of your main site, if you have social media streams, make sure your site details are updated through those streams.
To update your site's logo and other elements, you might be able to find someone via fiver.com or through lance.com. Failing that, consider asking local community or technical college for help as a student project.

Go to google.com/maps and search for your old listing. If it's there, a window should open with as much info as Google has about you -- address, hours, phone, etc. At the bottom in faint italic type you should see "Suggest an edit - are you the business owner?" -- That's where you click.

You should also change your info at these key directory sites that all feed google, or where people look directly. These are all free, but some may try to get you to pay for enhanced listings-- don't! It's not hard, just painstaking, but it will help accelerate the process of making it possible to find you again. Note that some, especially the ones with legacy print directories, can take up to a year to make a change...so start now! (Others will make the change instantaneously.)

bing.com/toolbox/submit-site-url and bingplaces.com (verification pin arrives by mail), mybusinesslistingmanager.com, dmoz.org, manta.com, mapquest.com (search "more"), openstreetmap.org, citysearch.com (citygrid.com), charitynavigator.org, expressupdateusa.com, yellowpages.com, supermedia.com and other phone books, your local city business directory, any state directories, other directories of nonprofits or organizations with which you're affiliated...

Note: Gary is right about using inexpensive sources, but he misspelled those two: it's fiverr.com (two "r"s), and elance.com.

It's quite possible that your updated website hasn't recently been visited by the search engine "spiders" recently. If your website is a blogsite, then use Pingomatic.com (free) to tell "everyone" that your site's been updated. Also, you might request Google to re-crawl your site: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6065812?hl=en

Yes: Fiverr.com and elance.com. It was late and I was typing without my glasses.
