2015 Father's Heart Fundraiser

Posted by nancesim on 250 Points
The Father's Heart is a ministry (mobile soup kitchen) that shares the love of Christ to those in need right where they live (throughout the city streets); by providing FREE a homemade hot meal, fresh groceries, clothing, bible literature, prayer and most importantly the life-changing message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This ministry is just a few years old and this is our 2nd fundraiser. We have decided to hold a dinner and chocolate auction along with a jazz trio at a local country club. We need to catchy name and logo for this event that clearly conveys the theme (chocolate and jazz.)

So who is your primary target audience? Where? How will they find out about the fundraiser?

Why do you want a "catchy" name/logo? Are your prospective donors drawn to clever use of words? Wouldn't it be better if they simply made a donation because they believe in your mission? You're going to reward them with a country club dinner, chocolate and jazz, and some small portion of what they pay will help feed some truly needy folks.

It seems to me that the goal should be to help them feel like they will make a meaningful difference to people who could use a boost, not celebrate their [relative] affluence with a posh dinner punctuated with jazz music.

This is a relatively new non-profit and although we do receive regular donations from surrounding churches which cover our monthly expenses but the cost of running the ministry at times exceeds what is coming in. We need to make necessary improvements to the kitchen where the meals are made, add a garage at the house for the mobile soup kitchen so we can have in on site instead of driving 20 miles to our building to load up each time we go out on the road and monies to eventually purchase another vehicle so we can cover more ground. We need to print invitations, flyers, place an ad or two and a simple logo/name for our event certainly helps catch the eye of those we are inviting. The meal although at a country club is modest and we are looking for a donor or two to underwrite a portion of it.

I just realized I didn't fully answer your original question(s). Our primary target audience is two-fold. First we would like to secure some corporate sponsorship and second we would like to reach anyone that has a heart for those in need. While it might seem frivolous, people like to be wined and dined.

Your corporate sponsors are not likely to be swayed by the country club dinner. And people with a heart for those in need should respond to an appeal without having to attend the dinner.

I'm having a problem with the planned solution to your problem, not disputing the need for some incremental funding. In fact, if you consider the cost of the dinner, chocolate and jazz event, it would be nice if that money could go directly to your real cause, not to folks who don't really need it as an inducement/ethical bribe to support your mission.

Corporate is one thing. Reaching "anyone that has a heart for those in need" needs much greater focus. WHO, specifically in this group is best suited as a prospect?

You really don't need a catchy title. "Catchy" to my ear would be like me coming to you and asking for something that was more Christ-like. It's difficult to define. You need butts on seats. You need something relevant.

To this end I propose partnering with every local and regional organization you can connect with: hospitals, hospices, churches, the YMCA, Easter Seals, United Way and so on. You then ask these organizations to help you spread the word.

Thank you all for your comments. I agree partnering with hospitals, churches etc is a great way to spread the word and those organizations are going to be targeted. I agree a catchy phrase isn't relevant so this afternoon I appealed to the board to update their 6 minute video presentation to illustrate exactly what goes on during an evening out on the streets. I'm also going to try and secure a local prominent figure that has been known to have a "heart" for the lost to be a guest speaker. You are right Corporate sponsors will not likely attend the dinner event and as far as expenditures, we will be soliciting local bakeries and chocolatiers for donations for the auction portion of our event.
