How will this survey DRIVE innovation?

Past innovation is done, it's meaningless. How will your survey focus attention on what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, who it needs to be done by, and why?

What organizations define as "innovation" varies widely. So my suggestion is to clarify their definition of innovation first.

Next, you'll need to define innovative activities clearly. Is product research innovative? What types of meetings are innovative? What types of approaches are? Can they quantify the efforts?

Most important is how an organization answers the question, "What's your innovation system?" If there isn't a clearly articulated system, then it's a bunch of separate tactics - some of which may be innovative - but not effectively.

What is the purpose of your innovation audit? What action will be taken based on the findings and conclusions? If all you do is "discover the nature of innovation within the organisation" it doesn't much matter what approach you take. If you know the ultimate goal, then you can use the approach best suited to the assignment.
