A Proposal To Magazine Sponsors/investors

Posted by ituzechris on 250 Points
we are looking to start a magazine, and we are in lack of knowledge of how to attract sponsors who might help us in its production.
What are the steps and important things we must focus on while composing the proposal? including categories of sponsors.

I suggest you reach out to Peter (henna gaijin) - since he started a print magazine a few years back and is likely deeply familiar with the issues you're facing. For his contact info, click on his name under the list of Top 25 Experts (on right column of this page).

A magazine aimed at which kind of reader?

First you need to know who your readers are likely to be. Then you identify potential sponsors who are trying to reach that same audience. Once you have that you need to explain to the sponsors why they should be interested in sponsoring your magazine (instead of whatever they are doing now). What's in it for them? How much will it cost them and what are they likely to get in return? If the return is greater than the cost, they are likely to go for it. If not, or if it's fuzzy, they will probably pass.

Sponsors? Can you describe what they would be doing, as I am not sued to hearing this term in relation to magazines? Do you mean advertisers (someone who would pay to place an ad in the magazine)? Or investors (someone who buys into the business with you)? Or something else?

I did start an advertiser supported (non-subscription) magazine and ran it for 4 years. Ended up shutting it down a year or so ago (2 others in the industry shut down at the same time - seems it is just getting too hard to get advertisers for others, not just me).

I did write a blog a while back which talks a little about how to get advertisers for a new magazine. Might be worth a read: https://expandabroad.blogspot.com/2011/06/ads-in-new-publication.html. At the end of the post, there is a link to a Nolo book that also may be worth a read - Starting and Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine by Cheryl Woodard.

You need to speak with Randall:

Randall has owned three magazines and consulted on two others.
