Tourism Marketing And Destinations

Hello!

I'm Adriana and I am thinking already about my dissertation topic. I really like Marketing and Destinations but I seem to be struggling a bit to combine those two into a particular research question. I also want to write a dissertation that will serve me well when I apply for a job in the Marketing or Destination management sector.
I was thinking something around Online marketing of a destination?
I will really appreciate your advice! I just don't find it easy to narrow my thoughts down to one question.

Thank you all in advance!

Rather than destinations in general, how about targeting a specific destination that you want to study?

Yes, I was thinking of London as I might be looking for job there. Isn't London a hard choice though, meaning that there is so much written about it in every possible aspect. There is quite a few researches done on London.

What, specifically is it about London that appeals to you? A destination for whom and for what? Connected to marketing how, exactly?

Personally what appeals to me about London is the many different experiences that you can get here and the variety of events that you can attend. However I can't really write about how events are used as a tool to brand London, there is too much done on this topic. I just seem to think of topics that have already been discussed.

There are events to be attended and experiences to be had in hundreds of thousands of destinations.
What SPECIFICALLY is it about London-based events are you looking at?

The term "events" is away too broad.

    What KIND of events?

Music? Theatre? Trade? Politics? Commerce? Sports? Fashion? Art? Technology? Commerce? Banking? Insurance? Healthcare? Research? Religion? Film? Education? Broadcasting? News? Publishing? Air, road, and rail transportation? Logistics? Food production? Imports? Exports? Oil and gas exploration? Pharmaceuticals, Iron and steel? Shipping? Advertising? Hotels? Gambling? Architecture? History? Archaeology? Anthropology? Museums? Zoology?

I need to come up with a very narrowed dissertation question but my thoughts are all over the place.
I chose London as a destination first because there is a lot more information that I could research and second because I plan to actually stay there after I graduate uni. I am interested in sports, languages and music as hobbies. I would stay away from events as a dissertation topic, I want to concentrate more on the marketing and destination management side and I am stuck. I was thinking about the challenges of the destination marketing- as for example holidays are intangible product, how do you market them and what makes people go for them? It sounds too general and not so original I know but I would really appreciate any opinions.

What venues in London are seeing a downturn in visitors? Could you reach out to get their data and see if they'd be willing to do some marketing experiments that might be beneficial? What about new venues that are struggling?

I can only think of small theatres- West End area(very central) seems to benefit the most because of its popularity, location and of course because they have a great revenue they can afford the rents, whereas the small theatres don't feel this secure anymore. This problem was quite popular less than 2 years ago. I'm not sure I feel quite confident with this topic though, I don't know how exactly I would try to reach an objective.
