Need Help With Business Name

Posted by llj11 on 500 Points
My business partner and I are in the process of launching a pattern design business aimed at people in the "crafting" industry and we are stuck on trying to come up with the right name. We want the word "design" in the name, but we don't want to pigeonhole ourselves in case we want to expand our demographic....does anyone have any ideas for clever business names that encompass the idea of transformation? We have a variety of attributes that make us unique and should be reflected in our name as well. We are creative, sassy, independent, free-spirited entrepreneurial woman who prefer to think outside the box than be stuck in the traditional confines of business if that makes sense.

The main world that springs to mind in terms of transformation is metamorphosis.

However, there are millions of male and female business owners in the creative and craft niche who can claim they are: "creative, sassy, independent, free-spirited entrepreneurial" and "who prefer to think outside the box than be stuck in the traditional confines of business".

Being "better", clever", "creative" and so on, none of these things count as competitive advantages.

    What makes you stand out.

You've done a good job of telling us about you and what you do. But not so much when it comes to who your primary target audience is, where they live/work, or what BENEFIT they can expect when they deal with you.

The name needs to resonate with your target audience, not with you or with us. Fill us in on the target audience and core positioning benefit. Then we'll have something to go on.

Can you describe what a "pattern design" business does? Do you design fabric patterns (for weaving, for example)? Or do you construct clothing patterns to help others make their own clothing? Or something else? Are you consultants or manufacturers?

Thanks to everyone who responded... I appreciate all the comments and advice. We are creating quilt patterns that have short stories or books to go along with the quilt design. Our target market will be both the modern and traditional quilter. Our target age group ranges from 35 and up depending on the story and design. We really want to take our customer on an adventure or journey with our stories and designs. We drink, we swear and we create. We are not your typical quilting stereotypes... that is for sure... we are two wild gals that just won't grow up but love to quilt.
The one thing we don't want for future purposes is that we do not want the words quilt or sew in the business name. We came up with the name gibu (get inspired by us) but the website cost way too much for us.
I hope this gives you a little more insight.into us and the business.
    Thanks

Maybe you can utilize a tagline to help define your business better then you have a little more latitude with the name.

    Something like:

    Wildly Inspired Designs
    unconventional crafting and quilting supplies

    The Crooked Needle
    off-kilter crafting and quilting designs

    you get the idea...

    ~Best of luck!
