Cosmetic Line Needs Name

Posted by kayla.m.roberson.08 on 250 Points
I have been making all natural cosmetics, giving them to friends, family, etc. My friends let their friends test out the products and so on. What started out as a hobby has quickly turned into getting requests for products from people I don't know. I have agreed to start a brand and begin selling them. I make lip balms, mascaras, eyeshadow, eyeliner, soaps, lotions, face washes and moisturizers, and even acne treatments. I make them in bulk and can also provide a customized cosmetic. I am undecided on packaging and prices at the moment as there are many options and target audiences for different products. I will be utilizing some form of bamboo packaging for each item. I have something available for men, women, and children of any age. I currently reside in the Kansas/Missouri area but with time would be willing to do business in other states, possibly internationally. I would like the name of my brand to be natural/earthy as each ingredient is 100% organic. I'm looking for a list of ideas, hopefully something will ignite a spark! Thank you in advance!

Can you help us out with a few more details. We understand that you are an organic line, but what is it that truly differentiates you from others? How will you be positioning (discount, luxury, etc)?

Most importantly, what do you want your brand to represent (what should people think of when they hear the name)?

You've done a good job of describing things from your perspective. But now, tell us about why people LOVE your products. Who's buying? You mention that you're trying to sell to everyone - that's likely to send an unfocused message which will translate into fewer sales. (Aside: I'm assuming that your cosmetics won't be certified organic, just be made of organic ingredients.)

It's too early to be thinking about a brand name. First you need to carefully define your primary target audience and articulate a clear benefit-oriented positioning statement for your business. You need business and marketing plans. And you need to think through what success looks like for you.

How much are you prepared to invest in this business -- in time, energy and money? Will that match your goals for success? Going from hobby to business is a scary thing, because it entails a whole range of new activities ... and a commitment that is often longer-term than most people anticipate. Plus, you will lose your hobby once this becomes a business.

So start by zeroing in on a target audience -- the narrower the better. Then figure out the important, compelling and unique benefit you will deliver for this audience. Then comes the business objectives, marketing strategy and overall plan/timetable.

THEN you can deal with the name.
