Best Fonts To Use For Digital/ Web Content

Posted by jordynk on 25 Points
Hi everyone, I am trying to find out the best fonts to use for things such as newsletters, brochures, posters, websites, email etc.

I have heard this differs between print and digital.

I would love some advise on which fonts to use :)

Thank you

It's not so simple. Read this book for some insights: https://www.amazon.com/Non-Designers-Type-Book-2nd/dp/0321303369

Jay's right. It's not so simple. If it were, everyone would use the "best" font. You need to consider the audience, brand positioning, medium, and a bunch of other things ... and even then there may be several font options that are "best."

There is no ideal font. What suits one person won't suit another.

I have a disc drive with over 3,500 fonts on it. Of those I've used maybe 35. Of those 35, I use fewer than ten on a regular basis (and I've been involved in graphic design for 35 years).

Myriad, Arial, Helvetica, and Verdana all work well as san serif fonts. Georgia, Minion, Palatino, and Garamond all work well as serif fonts. Stick with these (and the bold, Italic, and condensed versions of each), and you'll be fine.

To create authority, serif fonts are deemed to have greater social weight. As for legibility on screen, san serif fonts seem to hold the higher ground. The secret really is to test things. Set up two identical pages with the same layout and content and test varying styles of type until you find a visual and legible winner.

Thanks everyone for your feedback :)

Gary - thank you for your in-depth response, I currently use Myriad Pro so am glad I'm slightly on track.

I hope to do a few courses to build my understanding of graphic design next year which will surely help in my role.

    Much appreciated.
