What To Name My New Consulting Business?

Posted by connors on 250 Points
After 30+ years experience doing marketing/PR/events, I'm launching a consulting freelance business. I intend to work alone (with many connections, as needed) and many people know me by name.
After thinking of many names, it was suggested I simply go by my own first/last name so people can easily find and recognize me. Also, do I need to add PR after my name? Or does that box me in? Will be working on a simple website asap. I would deeply appreciate your thoughts!

If the focus of who does the work is you, your name (e.g. Bill Smith Consulting or Bill Smith Marketing) could work fine. One limiting factor though is that people will look at you as small - just you.

If the connections you mention are a larger part, then using a name that doesn't say you are a one person show may be better.

Thank you Peter. Great response, that's what I'm struggling with. It will be me, but I'll be fully in, and use other resources as necessary.

I'd add to what Peter recommends this: Who are/will be your clients? Will they be hiring you because they already know and trust you? If so, your name is the obvious choice. If you think that your clients will include conservative corporations or if you intend to grow to multiple consultants, then a functional name may be better.

Thank you. Yes, people know me in this city, and I'm not looking to grow beyond a few clients at a time. I appreciate your response!

If you're happy with your name recognition/referral, then I'd recommend using your name as your business, and add a tagline that clarifies what you offer, for example:

    Kathy Parsanko
    Public Relations Consultant

If people know you and you have a reputation, I would go with first and last name as your business. For growth you can add Consultancy or and Co later. Once you are established and grow larger you can consider a label -I don't usually recommend changing names, but sometimes that's the best approach
