Need Help Choosing A New Name

Posted by branzoid on 125 Points
I'm opening a Spinal Cord injury (SCI) Recovery gym, the first of its kind in Edmonton, AB. We use and intense exercise based therapy program to retrain the nervous system of someone who has suffered a SCI. I'm living proof that the program works as I was paralyzed almost 4 years ago and now I can walk with a walker.

My question is what do I name my gym? I was thinking PULSE, MORPHE, EVOLVE... I'm not sure if it should be an acronym or not, I want it to be catchy and memorable. I have thought about names in a different language like latin or greek but they don't roll off the tongue very easily.

Some sample names of other similar facilities are:
Project Walk, Beyond The Chair, REACT (Restorative Exercise and CommuniTy), C.O.R.E (Center of Recovery & Exercise)

Thank you in advance for your input.

I'd forget about "catchy." You provide a serious benefit, and you don't need to amuse your target audience with how clever you can be. Similarly, you don't need for the name to be "memorable." Most people don't expect to have an SCI, so they're not likely to be interested in remembering a solution to a problem they don't have or expect to have.

I would go for something straightforward like:

    "Edmonton Spinal Cord Recovery Center."

Your target audience is very narrow/focused, and they'll find you with a name like that. You can explain your uniqueness once you have some credibility and a chance to show how you are different from, and better than, other available alternatives.

We have come up with Breakin' Thru Paralysis Recovery Centre in graffiti lettering. The logo will be something like a person "breaking thru" a wall with a walker or kicking through. What do you guys think? the domain name is available and there isnt another company with that spelling, a nuance search has not been done yet.

My opinion: "Breakin' Thru" is very informal and will position the business as something less than totally professional.

Why not simply, "Spinal Cord Recovery Gym" (the domain SpinalCordRecoveryGym.com is available)?

We think that it sounds too boring and medical. We want something with more personality and brand-ability. As someone who has gone to 3 different SCI Recovery gyms I had a better time and felt more like i was at a gym rather than physio at project walk, and that was created by the atmosphere. I don't know if I'm explaining this correctly, but I do appreciate your responses so please keep them coming.

What you/we think is pretty much irrelevant. It's your target audience's opinion that matters.

We're giving you our best advice based on years of experience with positioning, naming and taglines -- as well as general marketing strategy. If you are saying that your likes/preferences are more important than our collective opinion, I would suggest a simple test among people in your target audience.

It sounds like you are letting your ego get in the way of a solid business and marketing plan. What are the marketing credentials of the "we" to whom you are referring?
