Content Conflict - Will Content Volume Overpower?

Posted by laura.card on 250 Points
On my website we have a reasonable number of job listings and I've been told that this will make it harder for any of the blog content (that we'll be launching shortly) to rank because it will be considerably lower volume.

Obviously there will be some keyword similarities given the nature of the jobs, but my instinct is that it would be different enough to rank - and the people who come to the website via the blog are on a different journey and trying to find out more rather than immediately looking at jobs.

Is anyone able to advise if this would be the case?

I believe you are correct. The content on your pages should be unique enough so that SEO will target users to the correct pages they're looking for.

Another question to ask - do you need the search engines to take people directly to individual job listings? Usually those pages are just temporary, so they probably don't need to be crawled. People can just be taken to the core jobs listing page.

Well written articles will always trump listings-based content (which is what a job listing is).

Can you clarify if this is this a SEO question or a usability question?

Jay Hamilton-Roth - it's an SEO question. My aim is to optimise the new blog content for SEO, but what I'm being told is that this might be a losing battle due to the volume of job listing posted.
