Posted by sewatseams custom tailor on 500 Points
Hi Everyone,

Your amazing group of educated skilled and talented people have helped me and my small business with answering questions and helping to provide professional advice and solutions to my small business in the past and once again I need your help. I am the owner of a custom clothing tailoring and alterations business since 2007. I also design and create denim art and accessories using some upcycled denim fabric and new fabrics.

Your wonderful team of professionals help me come up with a name for the business. I registered the domain name. When it was time for renewal
I forgot to renew the domain name and now some one else owns it. I have a large inventory of products ready to set up my store with. I now need to find a new name and this is where I need your help again. Please help me come up with a name befitting recycling, repurposed and new. I could really use your
help in finding a unique name for my ecommerce business.

Thank you, very much and all the best to everyone,

Patricia

My personal preference is to give advice and make suggestions about how you can do things yourself, rather than to do the work for you.

If this were my project, I would start by getting a blank these of paper, and I would write down words like recycling and repurposed and new and denim and custom and other words which describe your business and offering and distinctiveness. And then I would go to an online thesaurus, and look up each word, and identify dozens of other related words. After I had 100 or more descriptive words on a visa paper, I would try to narrow my list down to three or four or five which I felt were best, and try to build a unique name and URL.

Of course, I could go through the process for you. But I don't think I could do as good a job. You know much more about your business and your customers and your markets and your plans and so forth.

That is, of course, if you are seeking a descriptive company name. I am in general not a fan of overly descriptive and overly restrictive company names. Maybe you could combine the beginning of one word with the end of another word to create a short and easily spelled new word.

Thanks for asking the question, and thanks for your ongoing participation in the forum. if I can be of Further assistance, feel free to send me an email. Good luck and take care.

    Who's your typical customer?
Why do they purchase from you?
Your "large inventory" is mostly what type of goods?
Is your business most about custom tailoring or selling products?
Do your customers care about the re/upcycling, or are they in love with how it looks/works?

What was the old name? Do you feel it communicated the right message? Maybe we can tweak it to come up with a new/better name.

Please answer the questions Jay asked. The answers will give us some direction in coming up with a new name for you.

    Hi Jay,

My typical walk in clients usually require alterations or tailoring . My repeat clients seem to love the quality of my work, Some new customers said they were referred by a customer or read my customer reviews or found me online . My passion is sewing and creating a variety of wearable garments and accessories using different textiles and fabric or lately I have a passion for sewing and creating using recycling denim jeans new. I design and make denim jean organizer/ wall hangings, tote bags/pocketbooks, aprons for all occasions and a few one of a kinds garments using different tie dye fabrics.. I display several of my items in my shop.. I have sold a few items to customers just coming in, but my preference is to sell them online. le business concept and people love anything made from old denim jeans.Idesign and create a few item of clothing using unique fabric and new tie dyed fabrics made into one of a kind items . The name of the business was Yankee Denim Gifts , after selecting the name, and repeating it several times I didn't really like it, so it just as well I seek a new name with your help of course.

    Thank you

So your website is for homemade garments and accessories, and not for your alteration business? And if so, is the fact that things are made from denim what people loved about your crafts, or its functionality (and the fact that is was denim was a bonus), or something else?
  • Posted by sewatseams custom tailor on Author
    Hi Jay,
Yes, you are correct the website will be handmade garments and accessories and not for the alterations business. No denim isn't the only fabric they are attracted to. Many other garments and accessories are not made using denim. They seem to like and compliment all of my garment and accessories in any fabric I may choose.

For example I may choose to use cowhide or pigskin , I never know , it's what attracts at the time. I hope I gave you a clearer understanding of how I'd like to expand my business, craft and skill. I need to design and create . I am not limited to a particular fabric, I just happen to like sewing and creating using upcycled, recycled, reused denim right now,

    Thank you,

I've been writing down possible name for months and none seem to click yet, These are the name I had before and not sure if I limiting my products to this fabric . I like using the word denim in the name . I had my list Denimjean with a tagline( recycled, reused. DenimArtand Accessories, DenimArtShop Names like this sound okay I just need help in putting it all together and coming up with a unique for my online store.

    Thank you,

Highly suggest splitting into two separate entities - why - two different consumer, two different journey's to purchase...artjeans? and handcrafted? They are different age groups income needs/wants etc
  • Posted by sewatseams custom tailor on Author
    Hi cookmarketing@gmail,

I agree with you . Whatever name I do come up with will not distinguish one age group from another. The name must convey what I do in one to three words. I do not want the name to sound too homemade, when all of the design products are made using a sewing machine as well as some hand stitching using a needle and thread.

    Thank you,

    Hi KSA,

I actually like the sound of Handcrafted Arts and Gifts, Handcrafted Arts and Acessories, Handcrafted Clothing and Accessories. It spells out exactly what I do . I 've been working on trying shorten the name if possible. I'd like to ask your opinion if you think the name is too long and could be shortened and still spell out what I produce? I really appreciate your help and opinions.

    Thank you, .

FWIW, you might want to communicate how your target audience will FEEL when they own/wear your art/clothing rather than being explicit about what you do. Deliver an emotional benefit; don't be so literal. (Of course this requires that you understand your target audience at a deep level.)

Remember too that the name needs to resonate with your target audience, not necessarily what appeals to you.

    Hi KSA,
So far the products I design and sew are recycled denim wall art hanging using a quilting throughout the border. The collection of aprons I make are some my designs. It seems what I design and create does fall under the " gifts and or accessory" category. I isn't my plan to sell clothing online. I have a different site for clothing.

To,m goodman. I'd love to have customer input for coming up with a name , it would take too long to gather everyone's opinion. I need a name soon. The few names I do come up with I will bounced them off a few people when the time comes.

To answer Cookmarketing question I believe I will need one site with umbrella name and one subdivision. A name using the words gifts would work. I live and work near Cape Cod, Ma. There are many rivers connecting to the atlantic ocean and the canal if this is of help in coming up with a name for my online store selling handcrafted gifts.

    Thank you

You don't need everyone's opinion. You need input from about a dozen people in your target audience, and you should be able to get it in a week or so if you are serious about it. You need to ask a few high-gain questions and then let your interview subjects talk. Take detailed notes, especially of the words they use and their expressions of how your products make them FEEL.

If you interview a dozen of the right people you'll have a rich enough set of words and concepts to come up with a great name -- guaranteed.
