Present A Company In Front Of 30 Mba's

Posted by timsultan.95 on 75 Points
Hello people,

I am an MBA student of Business School. For the course called Management skills student have to write a report (case study), followed by an oral presentation, on the management practices of an organization with the main emphasis on highlighting exceptional or excellent management practices and techniques.

It should also include interviews, some statistics and financials.

I think it is a good promotion for a company to be spoken about in front of 30 mba students and professors (jury) for the whole course and a written report of ~10 pages.

So here is a question. Where do I find those companies? For financials, nobody going to share their data, unless it is a listed company or they do it willingly. For listed company I find it hard to contact with managerial and administrative stuff to get information and interviews.

Hope for your assistance. Any answers will be considered and if you can advise a company that would do this I would be grateful!

Sincerely,
Sultan

As you rightly point out, most privately held companies may not be keen on sharing their numbers. Fortunately for you, if you choose a US-based non-profit instead of a private company, and if you go to www.guidestar.org and create a free account, you can look at their I-990s ... the tax documents that non-profits are required to share each year by law. In these documents you'll find all kinds of details. And by combining them with annual reports, most of which are freely available from the website of the non-profit in question, you'll pull together sets of numbers, facts, executive salaries, figures, and outcomes to give you a pretty kick ass presentation. Good luck.

Many companies that are following excellent management practices are covered in business press, so you might be able to get the information you need about them from business magazines. Many of these magazines also have online content, so you can often do Google searches and find the articles you need.

You could start searching for companies of interest to you or that you think would be of interest to the jury and see what comes up. Look for companies that stand out in their market for some reason, as these are the ones that get written about. You may also want to choose one that is public so you can get the financials you need.

These companies are all large, so as you said, not likely that you can get an interview with a VP or C-level employee (though worth a try - give a call and ask). But quite possible you can find someone at a senior position who would be willing to answer your questions.

You might be able to get a former employee or retiree to talk to about the management style and reward system.
