European Home Ownership Rates & Home Types

Posted by Chris Blackman on 5000 Points
I'm researching the market potential for a garden product.

Propensity to buy is generally much higher among owners rather than renters, and clearly, among owners of houses (with gardens) as opposed to apartments or flats.

To get some approximate idea of the market potential I'm trying to establish the home ownership rates for the following Western European/Scandinavian countries:

Belgium
Germany
Ireland
Luxembourg
Netherlands
Austria
Finland
Denmark
Sweden
Norway
Switzerland
France
Greece
Italy
Portugal
Spain
UK

I also want to know how many of those owned homes are "separate homes" as distinct from medium/high density dwellings like apartments.

I will need to know sources of information to be able to establish their credibility.

Any useful SPECIFIC links or references would be gratefully received. So, please don't suggest somewhere vague like www.census.gov because the problem is finding the specific relevant pages in the time I have available.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Cheryl, I'll try Harris but suspect it wil be a custom project per country and the client doesn't have that time available. (Or budget at this stage, although they will, later).

Virago - thanks, I'll drop by Melbourne Uni this afternoon and check out their library.

I've suggested www.marketresearch.com to clients previously and they have come up with the goods.
Again, they may only have a per country capabilty, but its worth discussig with them to see what they have!

Might be worth contacting these guys: https://www.properties-in-europe.com/index.php
Or try official stats: https://www.statistics.gov.uk/ (UK) (https://www.statistics.gov.uk/census2001/profiles/commentaries/housing.asp)
I haven't looked around, but other European counties much have stats too!: https://www.lib.berkeley.edu/doemoff/gov_eurogvt.html

Thanks everyone for your inputs so far.

The most helpful finds to date have been Virago's EU Housing Guide and AndrewS' pointer to the Berkeley library which has links to a range of overseas data sources.

Funny, you think you can speak a few languages until you start trying to read statistical extracts from Government Depts. Fortunately most of the EU countries post in English as well as their own language, but in most cases the English translations are only a subset of the home country language files, Schade...

The Real Estate agency links aren't greatly helpful as mostly they are about buying, selling or renting, not statistical information.

Jose's Eurostat yearbook is a lovely piece of work, unfortunately at very high level so it's difficult to be very precise about much, but it does give loads of useful background info. Talking to MNCs in parallel industries is a god idea, unfortunately many of them may be potential competitors, and the sector we are looking at is terribly underdeveloped, very "cottage industry" still. Hence the global opportunity!

Will keep this question open a couple more days in case anyone else finds something exactly answering the brief.

    Thanks.

I think the world bank might be another source to utilize. They have information on countries world-wide.
    https://www.worldbank.org/data/

Hope this help in your search.

Thanks everyone, this has been very helpful. Hope now we can move the client on to the next stage where they get budget to perform dedicated in-market territory research.
