Tell 'Em What You Think

"One of the best ways to grow your blog, is to leave it," says Mack Collier in a recent post at The Viral Garden. "What I mean by this is, leaving comments on other blogs is a great way to create value for others, and ultimately grow awareness for your own blogging efforts."

However, "not all blog comments are created equal," he notes. He then offers a few tips for writing great ones. Among them:

Add something to the conversation. Great blog, thanks a lot! doesn't quite cut it, Collier says. "[H]ighlight issues that the blogger addressed, and add your own take," he advises.

Comment early. If you wait too long, others may have already said what you want to say. And you'll lose visibility at a popular blog: "[N]ot everyone will read down if your comment is #37 of 54."

Don't over-promote yourself. Remember, Collier advises, the comment isn't about you. "You are trying to create value for the blog [you're commenting on] by adding to the conversation. If you've done your job, you'll get promotion as an indirect result of your efforts."

Finally, Collier notes that it's OK to disagree (without being disagreeable) in your comment, and to ask a question of the blogger and fellow readers. It's all about feeding the conversation, he says.

The Po!nt: Add your two cents. "Write a [blog] comment that others find value in," Collier concludes, "and that [may encourage readers] to check out your blog."
