Peeling This Doesn't Make You Cry

In an article at the MarketingProfs website,  Mike Volpe explains that SEO is one of the most effective ways to help your customers find you. He compares SEO to a gigantic onion, noting that "there is always another layer you can peel off." For your site to show up first in search results, Volpe recommends optimizing the two main layers of SEO:

  1. On-page factors—or all that happens on your Web page.
  2. Off-page factors—especially the number and quality of links to your website.

Here's how he suggests you peel back those first, ripe SEO layers:

Pick unique page titles. Apply keywords relevant to the target audience. Also use a different page title on each page of the site.

Be smart about URLs. Use your own domain, so if you move to a new address, all the SEO power you have built up goes with you.

Start a blog. Recent content on an established website boosts rankings; blogs are also a terrific magnet for links.

Promote yourself. Leverage press releases with a link back to your website. Encourage more link-backs by engaging on social media.

Volpe contends these tips will earn you a higher ROI by improving organic search results while helping you avoid the dreaded per-click "tax" (aka paid search fees) to search engines.

The Po!nt: Peel away! Done right, digging deeper into that SEO onion offers a great competitive advantage—unlike paid search, where anyone can beat you out with a better keyword bid, Volpe notes.
