If you've ever seen a boring video podcast (and who hasn't?), you know that just turning on a microphone and talking in front of a camera doesn't guarantee awesome, engaging content. So what does?

In Friday's #profschat on Twitter, MarketingProfs asked HubSpotTV co-host Karen Rubin to chat about what goes into creating a captivating video podcast. Here then are five tips from that Twitter conversation.

  1. Be authentic.
"Podcasting is a great way to show your true self," says Karen Rubin. "People connect when they can see you and hear you. It's very easy to be authentic when you are podcasting, and that comes across to your audience."

  2. Reach your audience the way they want to be reached.
"People want what is most convenient," adds Rubin. "If they listen on the go, audio. If they are at their computer, video."

  3. Mix it up.
Don't limit your podcasts to just one form of content, but stretch out ... and stretch often. According to Rubin, "Great podcast content can include interviews, debates, fun antics, and giveaways." Just try something new, measure whether it was a success or failure, and keep trying.

  4. Consider big-name guests.
    "Famous guests are always popular!"

  5. Choose topics relevant to your audience.
"@mvolpe and I get submissions, then narrow down based on our guests and what is most relevant to our audience."

Special thanks to Karen Rubin for sharing her thoughts and advice about podcasting and social media. Unfortunately, Twitter's infamous #FailWhale ended the chat ... but not before we learned these five bits of podcasting wisdom. What would you add to the list of video podcasting must-haves?

And don't forget to join us at our next #profschat this Friday at noon (Eastern time)!
