The most-shared blog post of 2013 was a classic that made us laugh and learn&8212;all at the same time. Written by Tobias Schremmer, "19 Reasons Your LinkedIn Headshot May Be an Epic Fail" covered such LinkedIn photo fails like "terrible lighting" (Are you the Dark Knight rising? I can barely make you out from all those shadows.) And he shared such comments as “But I LOVE this photo of me…” (You love it, even though my head is right next to someone else's, the ear and left of eye of which you can still see because I can crop a photo about as well as I can consult for your marketing needs.)

 

 

2. Nine Common Phrases Made Great by Using 'You' Instead of 'We'

In the second most popular blog post of 2013, Tim Riesterer discussed the idea of "you phrase," which is more effective because it makes your prospect or customer the center of your story... not you. "Using the word 'you' instead of 'we' helps transfer ownership to your prospects and customers,' Riesterer wrote, "because it causes their minds to unconsciously 'try out' your solutions as you describe what they can do with it."

3. Fifteen Marketing Buzzwords to Stop Using Immediately [Illustrated Slide Show]

When we asked our MarketingProfs Facebook group what they thought were the most annoying buzzwords EVER, they answered so hilariously that I felt compelled to illustrate their answers, which resulted in a slideshow that I shared in this blog post.

 

4. You Know You're a Marketer If... [Illustrated Slide Show]

Once again, our MarketingProfs Facebook Group provided such fun answers to the fill-in-the-blank—"You know you're a marketer if..."—that we illustrated the answers in a slideshow to be shared.

 

5. There's Content in Your Pocket: 10 Marketing Lessons From Dr. Seuss

In this popular blog post, Oliver Wellington unearthed marketing gems from the works of legendary children's author Dr. Seuss. Quotes include "I meant what I said and I said what I meant"(Horton Hatches the Egg), from which Wellington shared the lesson: "Authenticity is an important part of content marketing. Readers and customers want honesty above all, so if you can't stay true to your brand and yourself when creating content, you're probably headed down the wrong path."

Jeff Woelker's company did an in-depth study of the most correlated variables when ranking high in search engines and found that seven of the top eight factors associated with high search rankings are social in nature. He then discussed that finding (and what it means to marketers) in a blog post that became popular with Daily Fix readers.

After the popularity of his initial blog post about LinkedIn headshot fails, Tobias Schremmer could not stop seeing more examples of headshots that needed stop cluttering the social network. He wrote a follow-up post called "19 More Reasons Your LinkedIn Headshot May Be an Epic Fail," which also became extremely popular with Daily Fix readers.

9. Four Types of Visual Content That Cut Through the Noise

In Ekaterina Walter's blog post, she wrote, "Our customers are hungry for good content, but any more they expect it to be presented in a snackable and quickly-consumable format. So how should marketers engage their communities through the use of visuals?" She then proceeded to write about the four types of visual content that best help marketers cut through the noise.

10. Ten More Buzzwords to Stop Using

After the initial success of the first blog post regarding buzzwords, we received so many funny comments and suggestions for a follow-up that we couldn't resist creating a new slide show of 10 more buzzwords to stop using.
