Enjoy Some Good Holiday Cheese
Published on November 5, 2009

As the goblins and ghouls out there munch away on their Halloween bounty, fond memories arise of one apparition we saw a lot of this season—the Monster Mash JibJab "sendable."

The e-card uses facial-recognition technology to seamlessly attach the faces of your friends or family to the body of a monster. Once customized, the card plays a music video in which your troupe, all ghastlied-out, performs the Monster Mash!

Okay, it's cheesy. But that's what the holidays are about: sacrificing some everyday cynicism to contribute to campy good times (vampire teeth, tryptophan [turkey-makes-you-sleepy] myths, mistletoe kisses).

Consider that Office Max's Elf Yourself campaign—which lets people attach their heads to elves and watch their miniaturized selves dance about—will enjoy its fourth annual run this December.

Yes, Elf Yourself is a silly gimmick, but Hitwise points out it tends to rise like cream to the top of the Humor category nearly every year. Customizable messages like this are free to users, great publicity for a brand (when they're good), totally viral (again, when they're good), and may even pay endless good-cheer dividends.

The Po!nt: Don't worry, be campy! As the days grow shorter, what users need is a little warmth and light. Why not put a social-media bit together that highlights your brand spirit and adds to the holiday festivities? You might evoke some genuine Ho-Ho-Ho's.
