Four Ways to Create a Worthless B2B Website

April 12, 2012
Over time, it has become clear that B2B websites need to incorporate a few fundamental elements to effectively and efficiently serve visitors. But many companies still don't get those elements right, Paul Hatcher argues in a recent Base One whitepaper.

According to Hatcher, there are five big mistakes B2B companies consistently make that render their websites ineffective.

We've highlighted a few of his points here—to create a handy primer on how not to build a great B2B site:

Don't define your vision. Probably the most important factor in the site design process is to "have a good collaborative team and a clear vision that everybody involved can buy into," Hatcher notes. Ignore him. Just slap something up there.

Ignore user needs and usability. Don't bother to define your users before you begin, either. Craft your content from your perspective, not theirs. Don’t create user funnels through the site to lead them in and engage them; they'll find what they want eventually.

I forgot the title of this article 1/2 way through and got really confused for a second. But once I remember this was a what NOT to do list, it's a good one. :)

ho hum. I'm tired of the short "5 things" lists in marketing profs. This article brief just doesn't provide any fodder worth repeating

    Hi, JR.

Looks like you're subscribed to the B2B Get To The Po!nt (GTTP) newsletter; by definition, those are the short/brief articles. (Also, check out the URL above... you'll see "short-articles" in it.) If you'd like to stop receiving GTTP articles, you can modify your newsletter subscriptions by going here: https://www.marketingprofs.com/newprem/editaccount/acct_mail.asp

Must agree with JR... I am as well a bit tired with articles in a format of "X" Tips of what to do and not to do... so many of them... I know that every guide will tell you that these work: "gather your thoughts, put a number in front and send them to the world." maybe I am subscribed to too many newsletters and this is the reason why I find another set of a generic thoughts like these of a little value... apologies for criticism

I agree, this has to be the MOST confusing list of "things" we all "need" to know. I read it several times, and am still not sure what each point is .... Sorry I clicked through to this one.

Knit pickers! Sometimes we become on autopilot or caught up in other minutia to the point, that we fail to focus on the basics. That's this article! It's aheads up... I read it, asked if that's what we're doing... winging it... and to my chagrin, on some fo the points we are. Need to retool and refocus. Good points, and although common sense, this remains the most common oxymoron.
