Issue 55 | June 16, 2006

Dear Askers & Answerers,

We're baaack! Know-How News has been on vacation the last few months. It was one of those spa vacations, so she emerges with a fresh new look, and more important: a slightly new perspective.

This newsletter has always served the online community of KHErs (forum participants) with links to the week's hot topics in MarketingProfs' Know-How Exchange. The new KHN adds links to three articles published at MP.com. These articles will focus on small business marketing to reflect the widespread participation of folks from small- and mid-sized companies in MP's discussion forum.

We’re pretty jazzed about this new focus. We’re looking forward to developing in-depth content to help those of us who DON'T have an army of marketing co-workers and piles of cash for implementing Fortune 500 marketing campaigns. Each week our "cover story" will be Premium content (for MarketingProfs'  Premium members). Then everything else in this newsletter will be for ALL members.

This issue is packed with good stuff. Be sure to check out the new feature, "Free Prize Inside." There you can access one of our most popular seminar recordings at no charge. Consider it a gift for opening the newsletter. (You all know how important open rates are!) There will be something cool in that spot every week ... and it will be available only for seven days, until the next issue of KHN mails.

It's really great being back in communication with all of you! Please feel free to send me feedback. I look forward to your replies.

Happy exchanging,

Email Marketing Survey: Analysis and Recommendations
Email marketers use a wide variety of techniques to improve response in their retention and acquisition email programs. Following email best practices drives strong improvement over the baseline. As in all marketing, however, the devil is in the implementation details, so campaign success varies.

Despite the benefits, response and the key drivers of response are not being actively managed-resulting in erratic success rates, lower performance, and declining response rates. However, the availability of good data and evidence of strong success when testing best practice strategies indicates that marketers are interested in moving well beyond the batch-and-blast tactics that spawned email marketing back in 1999.

Five Ways to Attract (and Hold!) More Qualified Lead
Writing for business-to-business lead generation is a balancing act: On the one hand, you want as great a response rate as possible. On the other, you don't want to clog the sales pipeline with useless leads-people who don't have the authority, interest or money to buy what you're selling. Here are five pragmatic ways for you to increase your success rate with the prospects who matter.

Small Business Branding: The Personal Connection
Thanks to the Internet, your competitors are no longer just the businesses down the street. They are the businesses in the next town, in the next country and even on the next continent. So, as the leader of a small business, how do you succeed in a dynamic world with a much larger set of competitors?

Today’s funny highlight comes from a discussion started by kbordsen. It’s stevea who had me laughing out loud.  He starts off saying: “Personally, I find the marriage idea a bit schmaltzy, but that’s probably because I’m British and somewhat reserved.” This put me off-guard for the fabulous imagery that followed:

“If you asked someone from this side of the pond for a setting, we would be incorrigibly influenced by Hollywood westerns, which probably wouldn’t work over there. Imagine having the four local banks hijacked by the bad guys, riding into town wearing black Stetsons and shooting the place up. Your blokes on white chargers, bearing shiny deputy marshal’s badges and six-guns could liberate them and everyone could ride off into the cactus lined sunset to the tune of a decent hoedown.”

Yes, Steve, that’s a MUCH less sentimental concept. ;)
