Dear Small Business Marketers,

You need to know about two BIG things happening here at MarketingProfs next week. Both are related to social media. And since many of you are readers or participants in Know-How Exchange, our discussion forum, you are ALREADY active in the social media space and likely to find these topics as interesting as I do.

  1. Wed: MP book club begins discussion in KHE
  2. Thu: MP seminar featuring virtual tour of Second Life
The Book Club is led by the irrepressible CK. You may know her from MP's blog, Daily Fix. In fact, if you haven't seen this particular blog post, check it out. It's a GREAT intro to CK's funny personality. And here's a note from her to you:

“Since the Book Club is based on knowledge sharing, the Forum is a perfect fit for our Group Review. While it’s likely we bookworms will be spending most of our time discussing how the book’s themes apply to our strategies and tactics, I know we will also find value in KHE -- and so your community there will grow. (I know I’ll be hanging around in KHE more!) Please jump into the book discussion with us. Citizen Marketers is a great read detailing the opportunities provided by this brave new ‘Web 2.0’ world. A BIG thanks for letting us share your space. We will do so with much respect and enthusiasm!”

Then on Thursday, we will have a first for our seminars. Greg Verdino will take participants on a live tour of Second Life so you can learn what all the fuss is about -- and whether there are some interesting new marketing opportunities available there for your business. (For a quick intro, be sure to read Greg's article below.)

But all that happens NEXT WEEK. Understandably, you can't wait until THEN for your marketing fix. So be sure to link to lots of useful information in our articles and forum teasers below.

Best wishes for a prosperous (and fun) 2007!

Welcome to Second Life, Marketers

The 10 Biggest Mistakes Marketers Make—No. 7: Living in the Marketing Silo
Customers want a seamless experience with your company—something that's difficult to deliver if you and your colleagues in other functions are separated by silos. To give customers what they want, and bring in the cash your firm needs to stay healthy, managers must break down those silos and replace them with cross-functional collaboration.

This work requires strengthening your silo-spanning skills or populating your marketing department with people who possess skills or experience from other function areas. Specifically, here are six ways to bust silos.

Welcome to Second Life, Marketers
Big changes are coming fast and, as marketers, we would be well advised to learn some lessons about metaverse marketing now, lest we be trumped by more nimble competitors.

But we need to be smart about our approach, realistic in our expectations and consumer-centric in our executions. Doing it just to do it isn't good enough. On the other hand, neither is waiting to see what happens.

Five Positive Thoughts That Will Turbocharge Your Writing (and How to Channel Them)
In October we published the author’s article on how negative thoughts can sabotage your writing. This week, she looks at the mirror image of the topic.

Read on to find out how this look at the "flip side" can help you write faster and better.

If you're a small business marketer wondering whether you'll run into conflict-of-interest problems if your firm decides to specialize in serving clients of a particular industry, this discussion is for you. rbooth3399 does a great job of setting up this conversation. And, as usual, MP members respond offering a couple of different viewpoints.

(The time limit is just for non-Premium Plus members. Premium Plus members may replay the seminar any time.)

Here's what one attendee told us about this seminar: "You have an online identity, whether you want to or not. Even zero online identity says something about you. You can have your hand on the wheel or not, but it's moving with or without you." Don't miss the chance to replay it. (Normally $99.)

This week's Last Laugh item proves stevea really knows how to start a fun discussion. Click below to read his takeover plans and several interesting ideas offered by fellow KHErs. We think renting Santa's Naughty & Nice list to Homeland Security (for airport screenings) is one of the best. We also thought the distinction between elf-originated gifts and non-elf was interesting, as well as the idea of retraining elves as chimney sweeps.

Discussion: I'm Mounting a Takeover Bid for Christmas Inc.
