William H Hoover. Having bought up his cousin's (James Spangler's) vacuum cleaner company, he could have called its product a Spangler.

"Have you spangled the carpet yet?" doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?

He went on to invent the door to door sales team, the free ten day trial and the indestructible boot for foot-in-the door selling.

    I'd nominate Neil McElroy.

In 1931, Neil McElroy, Procter & Gamble's Promotion Department Manager, created a marketing organization based on competing brands managed by dedicated groups of people. The system provided more specialized marketing strategies for each brand and Procter & Gamble's brand management system was born.

McElroy might not have been a marketing genius himself, but he sure changed the way brands are managed. The P&G brand management system has produced countless successful marketers, and it all started with the management perspective of Neil McElroy.
