Effective Ways To Generate Publicity For Retail

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
My question may have multiple parts, so please bear with me. How does one begin generating press contacts in magazines and other media (assuming there is no editorial masthead) for a niche online retail store.

Also, how do then get press to consider your submission? I would like to know how to apply this to a retail setting. If I sold handbags, how would I get people talking about my handbags, featuring them in magazines, providing them to TV Shows, getting celebrities to wear them?

I understand the product must be top notch and the pitch must be solid, but I am unclear on HOW to get the right contacts to send samples to. I am also unclear on how to make the best pitch for retail setting. I would also like to do some creative things with magazines, (exclusive handbag for them or providing for photoshoot) but have no idea where to start.

What should I be doing or better yet; where and how?

I am looking for any help and appreciate it greatly.

Thanks.

Hi Sandip2065, I'm most experienced with magazines (vs. television) so my recommendations are for this area. After you research your industry trade publications to find out which magazines are read, request a media kit that will include a sample issue, key stats about the magazine, advertising info., editorial calendar, key contacts, etc. The magazines do list contacts inside each issue (i.e. look for the editor(s) who is responsible for your product category). Most publications also have their media kit online. Many magazines list their requirements/format for editorial/press release submissions.

As far as celebrities, research where they buy their clothes and accessories, and contact the buyers of those retail locations about carrying your products. Best wishes to you in your endeavors.
