Job Description

The Chief Marketing Officer leads branding, integrated marketing, communications, public relations, and digital platform strategy efforts for the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and all its constituent programs including, but not limited to: an MBA delivered in five methods; an Undergraduate Business Program; a Masters of Accounting program; an Executive Development program and accompanying conference center; a PhD program; and a collection of centers and institutes all advancing Kenan-Flaglerís objectives of Shaping Leaders and Driving Results. The CMOís mission is to elevate Kenan-Flaglerís regional, national, and international brand to a wide audience, including current and prospective students, corporate partners, recruiters, alumni, donors, the media and other external audiences. The CMO has significant recruiting responsibilities such as multichannel advertising and content creation to generate leads for program admissions. Internally, the CMO serves as a thought leader on marketing and communications. The position also supports fundraising campaigns designed to grow alumni engagement and donor activity. The CMO serves as chief communications counsel and marketing strategist to the Dean and his senior team. The position oversees and ensures the effective efforts of a central marketing team of eight professional staff, student employees, several dotted line reports and multiple external vendors. This position reports to the Dean of the Business School. Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree (e.g. an MBA) preferred. Minimum of a bachelorís degree required.
Candidate should have 8 or more years of experience in branding, communications and marketing. Experience with services or other intangible products will be a plus. Candidate should have experience in people management, budget management and project management preferably in a complex, matrix organization. Managing a budget in fiscally conservative, limited resource situation is preferable. Candidate should have held positions of leadership that required collaboration and multi-product or multi-discipline coordination. Candidate should demonstrate a familiarity with, or at least openness to, new technologies and new marketing tools, including market research. Candidate should have experience setting and executing strategy. Candidate should have a customer service orientation with experience managing external vendors and marketing to multiple audiences. Candidates will be asked to present a marketing plan they have worked on to demonstrate capability in this area. Important skills for this position include communication, organizational, analytical, and influence.
