On this day in 1892, the first elevated (or "L") train began operating in Chicago. It's now one of the longest and busiest rapid train systems in the United States. I didn't hitch a ride on it when I was in Chicago last month, but I did take a moment to admire its city-staple charm from a coffee shop below it.
