Class Notes from Marketing Your Small Business

Being smaller requires being more resourceful. We programmed Marketing Your Small Business with small (or single-person) teams in mind, to provide the fundamentals on core marketing subjects. This course gives you what you need to know about marketing without breaking the budget or overrunning your calendar.

Here are three lessons from Ian Lurie's SEARCH class (now available on-demand). Follow these tips to help your webpages rank higher on search engine results pages.

Review the title tag on each of your pages to make sure the tag is relevant to the content on the page. Title tags are the most important on-page ranking factor in Google's algorithm.
Use your keywords in page titles, subheads, and within the body of the pages. Keywords are often underutilized, resulting in missed traffic and lost conversion opportunities.
Have your site coded by someone who has a clue about HTML. The code is the infrastructure of your website. If your infrastructure is poor, then everything else you do, from link building to copywriting, will be diluted.
Of course, Ian's is just one of 11 classes in the course. Visit the course page at the MPU website to see what other topics the Small Business course covers.

MPU Course: Small Business

Describe one SEO myth that's a waste of time.
"So many folks believe they can get a Top 10 ranking by submitting 9,000 comments to 9,000 different blogs. Those comments will typically say stuff like: 'Great post! See my site at www.siteaddress.com.' That doesn't help you rank because the comments are irrelevant, and they have all of the linguistic markers of spam. You're better off doing nothing."
