Confused And Need Help

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi guys,
I must commend the guys who thought of this website.I saw the encouraging comments given by the members for some confused souls like me. I really appreciate you all for that.

I am a 39 year old Engineer with more than 16 years experience mainly in the field of industrial automation with a Japanese MNC in Singapore. As I felt some stagnation in my career, I felt that an MBA would give me the necessary impetus to move forward. So have recently joined a two-year part-time executive MBA program.
With my background, I felt that Marketing specialisation would be an ideal choice.
But as I am allowed to specialise in two fields, I am a bit confused about the second specialisation I should choose whether to take "Finance" or "Strategic management" .

Though I have some industrial project management experience, I still consider myself comparatively new to the Finance area - so I am not sure whether that will be a good choice. Another reason for looking at "Finance" is that Finance can help me to make a career shift into banking or consulting.

But the pros for the Strategic management are - it would also go well with my other specialisation (Marketing).

So appreciate if some the good souls can help me with their comments.

My opinion is that Strategic Management would better augment your engineering background. I would not consider this to be a changing of carriers rather an addition to your engineering background. Manufacturinng and manufacturinging management both have very strong futures. Strategic Management would allow you the most flexibility.

    Hi,

it depends on how much Marketing you will explore on your MBA. If it consists of strategic marketing or managerial marketing then taking strategic management would not be neccessary as the two marketing courses give you a pretty good insight into strategic management anyway. Taking a finance course together with these marketing courses is a great choice. If your MBA cours explores promotional marketing or consumer behaviour or market research then there is lack of strategic management which you definately need. Study the details of each course and if there is an overlap choose those where there isnt going to be one. This way you will get the best of the two. Good luck, Emi

    Hi RS0035ES,

As you know Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a master's degree in business administration, which attracts people from a wide range of academic disciplines. I think success is all about "individual skills, aptitude and initiative" regardless of specialisation.

I agree that finance MBA gets dollar-paying jobs much easier, so it offers a bigger return on investment, while a marketing MBA gets jobs specific to the limited market.

Universities got there own definitions about the above programme. I feel the program is designed to meet the challenge of full-filling the needs of the society under resource constraints by providing new dimensions in the body of knowledge needed for managerial development.

Environmental, social, ecological, and economic forces are affecting every sector of business enterprise and every area of business, governmental and industrial administration. The MBA program prepares student for assuming responsibility of management in their career path in business and other organizations.

As a mechanical engineer, I have finished my MBA in Marketing and currently doing PhD In Marketing because I felt it will give boost to my career. It is already started shaping my career in different way. I am as PhD- Marketing Student will suggest you to do MBA in Marketing.

If you have Mech engineering and MBA in Marketing will give many option to understand the real market in the sense of - sales, marketing, material supply, accounting, finance, recruitment and operations system very quickly. It is all in one……! If you still not happy from the results then speak to career adviser in your area.

    I hope this will help

    Regards,

Although a Strategy position has a better chance of leading to a high-end job in a corporation...there's ALWAYS work for someone with a specialization in Finance!

    Good Luck, Debi
