Local Market Research

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
I am about ready to create a competitive analysis/target market analysis for a business plan I am working on for an assignment. The problem I am having is finding relevant information with regards to the Columbus, OH creative services market. My business plan is to start a creative marketing communications company aimed at small business and other entreprenuers(eg-web design, print, video, etc.).

How do entrepreneurs do market research analysis on a local market without paying through the nose (or in this case a student)? The one place I haven't really used yet is the Department of Development, but are there other alternatives?

Thanks for any help.

Search the web, phone book, yellow pages and assess the competition. Check local chamber memberships and other relevant association membership lists. Fees are usually listed on web sites. Can call and ask them to send an info packet.

Another place to check is your public library. They probably have a "job seeker" section which has both on-line and print resources for personal use (and it seems to me your situation falls in that category). My local library system subscribes to online databases, which can be accessed remotely using a library card. In many cases, county library systems will have a "business library" or a business research specialist, and these folks can be suprisingly helpful.

Thanks moxie. I do have access to the university library, but none of them seem to have the specific details I am looking for as it relates to the local market. I might not be looking in the right place. I find plenty of stuff on the industry itself, but not locally.
