Help Me Make A Press Kit Attention Getting.

Posted by Anonymous on 125 Points
Does anyone have any creative ideas for press kits?
I promote annual events – mostly rodeos – and my press kits are the same old thing every year. I’d like to grab the media’s attention in a new way this year. Can you offer some suggestions? Nothing pricey, as I send out over 100 press kits each year.

Thanks –

    Nicolaus-

Do you use the press kits at the events in a press room, or do you mail them out to individual writers? I have a couple of thoughts, but if you can answer this question first, it will help me with my answers.

    Thanks,

I mail the press kits out to daily papers, TV and radio stations - anyone I want to cover the rodeo. I don't usually mail them to a specific name, but "newsroom", "sports editor", etc.

I've considered doing something special at the event for newspeople. I do want coverage at the rodeo. However, I also want promotion of the event prior to it.

Do I plan a "media get-together" at the rodeo and a separate get-together a day or two in advance to promote the rodeo?

    So here's an interesting idea...

How about a unique press kit. Rather than a standard CD or folder, send an inexpensive cowboy hat that has your printed press releases inside of the hat, with the hat upsidedown in the box. Send it to them in a hat box. This will be a large enough package, that they will be inclined to open it. That's the first battle, getting them interested enough to open your press kit.

Here's a couple hat sites I found with a quick Google search:
    https://www.orientaltrading.com/application?origin=page.jsp&namespace=brows...

    https://www.webhats.com/Catalog/Category.aspx?id=32&Page=2

Spending $5.00 - $15.00 at hat may be expensive, but if you get 70-90% of them opening up your press kits, itsn't it worth it?

Hope this idea helps or at least leads you in a new direction!
