    Marketing-Getting your product heard of, and make it preferred on other products
    Sales-Making sales
    You can use the analogy of
    Marketing=bringing the horse to the water
    Sales=making the horse drink

    Ill just rephrase what ILAN said..........Marketing is "How to bring the horse to water" ....Sales is ........"Making the Horse drink the water"..........simply put Sales is the Executive arm of Marketing

    I view marketing as the process by which a company figures out what the target audience is going to need, and then comes up with a way to satisfy that need and deliver it to the intended audience ... and earn a profit in the process (assuming that's the goal).

    Of course "delivering" the product includes not just the physical delivery, but also the communication of the key benefits, contact with the distribution chain, etc.

    Sales is the branch of marketing that manages the customer interface.

    I think when you don't include identification of the unmet customer need, you short-change the definition of marketing.
