What do you mean by "the graphic design brand", there is no such thing...
Pentagram, IDEO and other great design firms who do more than just graphic design (much more!) are the best partners a business can have.
On the other side, there are many very pretentious graphic designers who don't know much about the world of business, yet they manage somehow to design logos for businesses who think that's the brand...
I have the utmost respect for graphic design, as long as it is in the right hands.

    Every industry has a brand.

The answer you gave is great. It speaks to why this question is being asked. The concept, that graphic design in the mind of the business person may be that anyone can do it, you just need the proper software. This misunderstanding, defines graphic design's brand. All be it poorly. In comparison, the Architectural brand does not suffer from the attitude that anyone can do it. It's brand is very positive, as are engineers and programmers to name a few more.

Your response came in as I was typing the first reply.

Since your 'brand' is essentially your reputation, (from a corporate brand perspective), graphic design or any other dicipline for that matter has a brand. Public perception of that brand defines it.

Your response defines the graphic design brand in a positive light.

On a lighter side you could say that the politician's brand is a negative one.

My mentor once said that our industry has no barriers of competition. That is there is no certification or license needed to work in it. All one has to do is get a business card and call themselves something. I am not a graphic designer something much worse a photographer. The same hold true though. I know that I market my professionalism. Simply you take a risk using cousin Bob who takes pictures and has a camera. Do you want your business to look like cousin Bob or a professional. Unfortunately there is a willingness to except ever greater degrees of mediocrity. That said a good way to define yourself is looking better than your competition. If looks are not important then why did you consider the clothes you put on this morning. Why do models exist? How come sales people where suits? [begin my sales line] Looking good is important! If you don't look good its probably costing you money and you don't even know it. My job is to insure your business looks its best. [end sales line]
