High School Competition Ideas?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
We are trying to promote our shopping center. Our main focus is to become more involved in the community. Right now, we are trying to coordinate a fundraiser for the 4 local high schools (proceeds go to each school's Project Graduation...a night of non-alcoholic, drug free, supervised fun on the night of graduation).
Our plan is to coordinate a contest among the seniors from each school. First place minimum $1500, Second place $1000, Third place $750 and Fourth place $500. We would like to provide some avenue of donations from customers to offset the prize money. (Anything collected above the prizes would also be donated to the schools)
Any ideas for a non-alcoholic contest over a 1-2 week period that would 1. increase traffic into our center and 2. make as much money as possible for the cause?
I don't want to come across as doing this ONLY to increase traffic. We would occasionally prefer doing something to benefit the community rather than spending all of our dollars on newspaper and radio advertising and this is a great cause!
Thanks for any help
Judy

    A student art show.

Give the students from each school a free kiosk. Let them decorate and sell goods (your approval required for the items sold). Keep sales receipts - most sales wins prize.

Have the cheerleaders from each school do a car wash. They can compete for the most cars washed....assuming the schools are relatively equal in size.

My daughter did this as a fundraiser for the squad. they did 3/year and each time raised about $800.

    MODESTY please.

Sorry if this pops up twice -- techno genius I am not. Anyway -- shopping center in our area holds an annual art contest/show in a vacant space in their center. It coordinates art from area schools and involves the local art council and various orgs. Several different categories and different types of art are involved. When the contest is over, the art entries become a temporary art gallery. Local artists are the judges. It's a great benefit to everyone involved. Who doesn't like to see their child's artwork on display and drag every friend and family member in to see it? They hold a reception to give out the awards -- invite the media -- good photo opp for the paper. If this is too large an undertaking for what you want to do -- scale it down a bit and tie the art entry criteria to something specific like photos of the area or renderings of historic sites, or models of something. It could even be competitive among the area high schools -- where they could work in teams from each school. Just a thought. Good luck. Mary Kurek

Hold your own HS Seniors talent show - and charge the audience $1 each to vote. Pit the individual school's seniors against each other for raising money.

All you'd need is a stage / microphone and preprinted voting tickets and a LARGE space.

Each contestant would bring in all their friends & relatives to vote for them - and whichever HS received the most votes for their talent would win the pot of money from all the votes.

AND THE TALENT WINNER would get their photo on a large banner hanging at the mall for a week or so.

    Have fun! D.M.

What about a contest for decorating a store front representing their school spirit on a lighter side...

or on a more sensitive and buzz worthy topic like drunk driving, teen pregnancy, drugs, etc.
Each school picks a topic and have to come up with a way to display the message. You could get coverage in paper and from organizations like DARE, MADD, ... Collect donations and a % could go to winning displays cause.

    Or

Going off the talent show idea... you could have battle of the bands, dance contents (all these dance shows are so popular), singing...

    or

Parade with floats and bands from each school

Charging audience 1-5 for any of these would raise a lot of money.

It would be great to come up with something that could be held annually for senior classes to come. That would keep the awareness for years to come.

Have kids come up with the local advertising campaign for the shopping center. The winner promotes the shopping center on radio, print etc. I'm not sure what kind of store, but if you have weekly flyers etc. you could put the winner in them...

    Great Plan.

How about holding a 'Dragon's Den' type contest using 4 judges (shop keepers) from your chosen shopping centre as the judges. Plus one from your local radio staion and other media (Would guarantee free air time)

Have the seniors create a marketing campaign for the promotion of the shopping centre and generate good PR for both your school, the centre and the community.
