Moving Onwards Into Entertainment Marketing

Posted by Anonymous on 100 Points
Hi all, I'd like some advice as to the best way to move forward into the industry I have aimed for since my interest in Marketing turned into reality.

My profile describes where I am now, and healthcare is an industry I fell into after university by accident, and it's not one that particularly floats my proverbial boat. My passion has always been film and TV and I would do almost anything to get into it.

I've had some work experience in a SP agency dealing in this and it was fantastic. I've looked on all manner of entertainment, film companies etc, TV channels and no jobs and no information about marketing. How can this be?! I've done the research, and I know it will be a difficult industry to get into, but I am a determined young thing!

Does anyone know any good agency contacts that could give me some advice? My dream job would be marketing films themselves (advertising, PR, SP etc), but whether these are through in-house or agency does not matter. And before you ask, the place I did work experience currently does not have anything available.

Well, the good news is, I reckon you're more likely to find what you're looking for in the UK than back here in Oz.

First (I know, I always say this) segment your target market. Split it up by business type, i.e. Film - Production, Distribution, Exhibition, TV - Production, Broadcast, Cable, VideoGames, Theme Parks, Conventions & Exhibitions etc... Get the company names in each target segment (BT Yellow Pages, Industry Journals).

Call and ask for the personnel dept and ask them who heads up marketing. Call that person and ask them when they have fifteen minutes to meet you. Go and present a five minute pitch on why you should be hired. Leave a resume.

Make the 5 minute pitch focus on your USP and Value Proposition to them. Make the price negotiable. You need a leg up, not a high salary. Once inside you can prove your worth.

Follow up with a handwritten card thanking them for the oportunity, say in it you'll call in the next week if you haven't already heard something by then. Then, when you ring, just assume they want you and ask them when they'd like you to start.

Let's face it, you're young, female, and best of all - an Aussie - the last part of which which is one hell of an advantage. When you've made your first 50 billion quid you can become one of them, Like Rupert Murdoch.

On ya, go knock 'em dead.

(OK, that was partly tongue in cheek, but to coin a well known phrase Just do it!!!!

    Hope this helps.

I will resist the temptation to make this a career planning essay, but that's really the right way to answer your question.

I would suggest you get yourself a copy of
    The Potato Chip Difference
. The subtitle is How to apply leading edge marketing strategies to landing the job you want. The book has a US orientation, but it is popular in the UK too, and you can get it at Amazon.co.uk.

That book has examples, case studies, exercises and other tips that you will find directly relevant to your situation -- and it will give you some specific "go do" steps you can take now.
