Promoting Webinars For Financial Software Company
Posted By: tassi* on 11/15/2004 12:43 PM (CST) 125 Points
I've got to come up with an effective way to promote a series of webinars that our company is going to be conducting. I'm not that familiar with what works best for promoting webinars, as our company just recently began conducting them. Any advice?

You don't say if your webinars are free or not, but two things we routinely do with our training (read, not free) web seminars with good results are:

1) emails - it predisposes your audience to be somewhat computer savvy & therefore able to participate in an online format - use your internal database and ask them to pass along - send them about a month out, with a reminder closer to the date

2) calendar releases to related media - for national/trade magazines you'll need send them out at least 2 months in advance (to account for printing cycles) - local newspapers are typically on a shorter schedule

And of course, put them front and center on your web site, so any visitors see it.

I am a banker and the webinars that we use are the ones where we get mailers (postcards) describing the seminars.....

I would think a combination of emails, mailers, and postings on financial websites would be a good start....

Personally, I like the term 'Online Seminar' better than webinar, so if my advice is worth anything, use that terminology instead....

Try sponsoring some of the newsletters that you receive, many newsletters have ad space, and it is rarely very expensive. I would recommend putting some kind of tracking mechanism so you can see how many people are coming from your various efforts and signing up for the online seminar.

What is the purpose of your webcast -- are you trying to educate the market? Are you trying to retain customers? Are you trying to gain new leads/prospects? Depending upon your objective, I would change up the tactics. (Less outbound marketing, more telemarketing to your installed base, etc.)

We have been most successful in doing integrated outreach for our webinars/webcasts. I would recommend placing advertisements in industry publications, renting e-mail lists and placing eNewsletter sponsorships in the same publications.

In addition, I would recommend highlighting the webcast and/or registration pages on your web site as well as in your installed base outreach plans. (Do you have a regular customer newsletter? If so, be sure to plug your webinars there as well.)

Hope that this helps!

Hi:

Please don't forget the professional and/or industry associations for your area. Cover them - rent their lists - and work them for your online seminars.

I hope this helps.

Hi Tassi,
Since you are planning to have a series of Webinars I would 1st suggest that you track all the ways that you advertise and find what works best this will result in a better ROI for the later webinars.
Choose the terminology depending on the kind of crowd you want or expect. If you are looking at more techy people Webinar should be fine, if you looking at more laymen use Online Seminar.
Free webinar usually has more turnouts and are usually passed on to friends by many.
Other good advices are already up there.
Regards
Sanjeev
