How Do You Measure The Effectiveness Of A Marketing Mentor/coach?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
After years of trying to keep my marketing business viable I found I was still a start-up. My mentor wants me to research prospects before I call, follow a detailed action plan that he recommended, and report on my results weekly. It seems to take too much time when all I want is fast income now. How do I measure the value and effectiveness of the mentor? He has a lot of experience, but I am paying him! Shouldn't he open doors and make calls for me? RUG

Funny...this sounds errily familar to my first experience. Actually, almost exactly! The best way to measure the value and effectiveness of your mentor is to look around you. Where has he got you? Whose making money...him or you?

I took a look around and found my mentor was milking me for what I had because he was insecure that I had "learned too much" and would surpass him if he didn't keep me on a tight leash.

He was right. I broke free from him and his advice...and in less than 6 months after doing so, I had 6 times as much business as he and was actually moving forward.

Jump out there and just do it man. Quit paying this guy to keep you down.

You may want to go online and do a google search on "marketing reasearch". There are many firms and websites out there who have compiled data for all kinds of demographic needs etc.

I would also recommend focusing on the client. Put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself if you would honestly utilize the services you offer for the price. In stead of thinking "I have a talent, so PICK ME!!", try thinking "Why would they pick me?". Does your demographic utilize a lot of your style of marketing ...or do you just think they should? Ask yourself these things.

Another useful tool is in an article by Michael Fischler, founder and principal consultant of Markitek (markitek.com). It is free, easy, and VERY enlightening!
