Marketing Vs. Marketing Communications

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Can anyone give me an explanation of the difference between marketing and marketing communications and what the process should be when the two work together.

My company cannot seem to get this straight and the situation is progressively getting worse. I think the overall problem is that some marketing managers have little marketing experience and think marcom should do everything from the marketing plan to managing the production of a brochure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Theresa's answer is as good as it gets -- make it easy on yourself: if there is communications to the marketplace involved (PR, trade show, collateral, that kind of thing) it's marcomm . . . the rest is marketing proper. Good place to drill down to the distinction between marketing and product marketing is to visit Pragmatic Marketing's site and learn from there.
