How Do I Get Large Companies To Buy My Street Maga
Posted By: petrie* on 6/9/2005 3:39 AM (CST) 250 Points
I market a magazine which is sold on the streets by homeless and unemployed people. We operate as a social enterprise which means that we use business principles to achieve social goals. We recruit and train people to sell the magazine who but it for $2.00 and sell it for $4.00 thereby giving them $2.00 for every magazine they sell. We are a non profit organsiation and our sole goal is to help our vendors to get back on their feet.

I want to get into large organisations to sell the magazine but I do not know how. I also just need promotional idaes to lift the profile of the magazine.

HI PETRIE,
i must appreciate u r doing such a gr8 work in this field...
now as a non profit organization u need to take in consideration one important thing that is u cannot advertise but yes ucan go for PUBLICITY..
the first and foremost thing should be to know wat is the content of ur magazine and is that is weekly or monthly or daily..
see there is diffrent techniques for all of these..
u can go to large organization and asked them to give there interviews and then publish those things in the magazines...
there should be some articles which should be beneficial for the organisations u r targetting.
i think that must have answered ur question
regards
thanks for putting up ur question at KHE

I think first and foremost, you need content that relates in some way to the businesses that you most want help from.

I'm curious though, why would you want the large corporations to sell the publication versus the people who are doing it now and doing it as a way to get 'back on their feet'? Would not the corporations be competing with the on-street sellers? And what type of corporations are you targeting? Would they too be offered a profit on what they sell?

If you are just looking for corporate charity, it might make more sense to go through the appropriate channels with their corporate giving departments to see if you can be awarded a grant or donation, rather than try and use them as a distribution channel.

Hi Petrie

I congratulate you on your endeavours working for a social cause.

There is Big Issue in the UK that started the same thing years ago.
Check out there website here http://www.bigissue.co.uk/Orgs.html

I'm sure if you contact them and fellow social charities you may affiliate to them and learn what works for gaining corporate sponsorship and increasing your brand awareness.

There are alot of things you can do but it will take investment, so it may be better to talk to these organizations first about solid approaches that will give you results immediately.

Hope this helps.

hi petrie

you are doing a great job, i congratulate you !!

my 2 cents on your problem are....

Find out organizations that are engaged activites to become a Good Corporate Citizen. also many companies regularly sends brochures and other communication materials to their clients, i.e. Banks send Account Statements, Phone Companies send bills to clients. Tap into these companies to buy your magazine in bulk and send those to their clients free-of-cost. This will act as a way of meeting thier Corporate Social Responsibility. Companies in Alcohol and Tobacco industry are more inclined to undertake such CSR activities.

Another option can be, to organize various events, like Job Fair and ask the companies to represent in stalls. Rather than donation for organizing the fair, you can ask the companies to buy magazines instead.

btw, you can check this link on an article on Marketing of Non-Profit business/ventures.

hope this helps.

cheers!!
