Flyer Insert Vs. Display Ad?

Posted by Anonymous on 26 Points
Hello All:

I'm having a difficult time deciding on which format will receive the best lift in awareness and readership, a flyer insert or an actual Ad in a Newspaper.

The Flyer would be a full page, but it would be folded, the benefit of this is it will be in color and people could easily take it with them anywhere without carrying the entire paper or tearing the paper up. The cost of this however including the printing charges is double that of actually placing an ad in the paper.

However, there are also positives of having an ad in the paper vs. the flyer. Some may look at flyers as junk mail and wouldn't even glance at it. Also, there is no issues of misplacing the Ad as Flyers tend to slip out of the paper or misplaced.

Let me know your thoughts of any studies or personal experiences between the two formats.

Much appreciated.

Recognizing that this doesn't address your question directly, the quality of the creative product -- copy and graphics -- will far outweigh the flier-versus-display advertising issue.

If you have really great creative, either one should work. And if you have very ordinary creative, neither will be very effective.

That's not to say that you shouldn't make an informed choice. Only that you're worrying about the small stuff instead of the big stuff. (Or maybe you've already addressed the copy issue and now you're ready to deal with the specifics of the medium.)

Forcing this choice suggests you have already ruled out a whole bunch of other options. Before we can be really helpful to you, it might be good if you can give us additional information about the market, your industry, who you're trying to reach (i.e., target audience), etc.

I would like to know what are you trying to market? The best thing is to do a test if your budget allows you to. This will indicate the best medium. For marketing to be successful it depends on the offer and the product plus the presentation. Hope this helps.

I have used both mediums - flyers and display ads - to some degree of success. The flyers are nice because you can have extras printed to mail/distribute to various places in the community/organization/whatever. To some degree, I agree that flyers do get misplaced among a lot of other flyers, but if you go with smaller papers, you might have the only insert in the paper.

Display ads are nice if you can design them effectively and have a small degree of control over where they are placed.

Flyers for my organization have been used to announce new services/programs and for special events.

Again, I agree with others that it depends upon what you are trying to market. Good luck!
