Many people turn to licensed therapists as opposed to Psychiatrists these days. They provide a more loving and compassionate approach to mental health.

Midwives are also more loving and compassionate.

So I would say pump up the healy feelyness of both departments.

Plus, Healthcare is growing increasingly impossible to get especially if you have a mental health problem or a female problem that requires surgery.

I would promote a way to help those who really need it with realistic payment plans and help them get govt. funding too.

I have a close friend who is a psychiatrist, works both for a chain of hospitals and his own private practice. In the hospital, the beds are almost always full-- but its a hard dept for a hospital to make money off. The patient that is admitted (sent) to the psych ward of a hospital is often without insurance and little means to pay.

The money appears to be in treatment of depression and addictions.

While many go to midwives as one poster states, the midwives often work under a doc-- and in any case-- the babies are delivered most of the time in a hospital! The business here seems to be driven by the doctors. Few go to a hospital that isn't supported by the doc who's been doing their prenatal care. Its interesting that pediatrics is doing OK, but gyne isn't. Look into why they're bringing the kids to you, but not having the babies there or handling their "healthy women" care there.

In my area, not every hospital has invested in a psych dept, because of the high # of uninsured and shortage of psychiatrists. Have you approached those lacking those rescources asking for referrals? Can your drug reps help? I know my friend occasionally gets additional training just to write some meds, some control the # of scripts he can write. Get your docs to take the training to be able to provide those niche services.

    Good Luck, Carol

swee is right on targert with the idea of community programs. Once potential patients have a taste of the expertise of your professionals and facilities, they will have more propensity to become customers. Set up the workshops/talks for both mornings and early evenings. Choose a non-threatening place and serve light refreshments. Have doctors/midwoves/professionals give 45 minute-1 hr talk with Q&A; they can also distribute info/handouts etc with promo material on the hospital. promote with flyers at places frequented by prospects-- childcare, recreation, hair salons, exercise studios, etc. Then once you have this going, see if you can get a local newspaper or newscaster to do an article or info spot. Once word gets around, you'll begin to see the results of the publicity and word-of-mouth. You can also offer these talks to school and neighborhood groups if they are large enough to warrant your professionals taking their time to speak.
