Gmail And Aol Display Issues & Text Versions

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Hi -

With AOL and (upcoming) gMail defaulting to a no-image presentation, and preferring to display text-only versions when certain code is present (e.g., form code), it seems we all may have to stop treating our text versions as an afterthought (guilty!)

So, I'm curious, what are developers doing to stay ahead of the curve? I've seen some linking to site-hosted copies of their emails - I'm thinking I'd like to expiriment w/ a text-centric (HTML) email and landing page architecture...

ideas? thoughts? solutions?

    Hi Yuknat,

    Great post/question.

Currently I am working on two projects in which we are doing exactly what you mentioned.

    1) Is HTML but text-centric that has a short summary with a link to the full HTML email marketing piece (this will be an announcement, newsletter, whatever the strategy calls for.)

    2) Is HTML but text-centric that links to a web landing page specifically designed for the campaign. Here will be the content and calls to action.

I think they are both going to work great, testing has shown a very high clickthrough, and as more companies migrate to solutions like this, those should continue to increase.

Check back with me in a month, I'll let you know how it is going.

    I hope that helps!
