What have you changed on your site in the last day or so?

Check that the site is working correctly and as intended.

Check you sites security certificate (if you have one) and make sure it hasn't expired .

Check twitter and other social media for bad press that might effect your sales/customer satisfaction.

Wait until you get a trend. One day is not a trend and any number of things can affect sales. Since you did not give any other information any advice you get is not likely to help you. One has to have details in order to render the proper advice.

I agree with Harry. You need to analyze what recent changes you've made so that you are prepared. Then give it some time to see if the drop is a trend or anomaly. If it becomes a trend, let's discuss what changes you've made recently.

It is also helpful to know what kind of site you have. Transactional, informational, etc.

Carl, Harry and excellira are all giving you good advice. Check your Adwords stats too, and make sure they haven't somehow changed your quality score and position. Maybe there's someone new outbidding you. Are you getting the click-throughs but not converting, or are you not getting the click-throughs?

Also be sensitive to the 40% drop actual numbers. If you've been getting 5 conversions a day, and then you got just 3, that's going to be a lot different than if you were getting 500 a day, and now it's 300.
