Considering Lease Sharing

Posted by scarfnerd on 250 Points
I am considering a lease share with someone. I would like to get a studio where I can produce my (clothing) designs and showcase to customers. I have a small clientele already. What kind of businesses would go well with a clothing designer/retailer?

Any other tips?

Have you got someone in mind already, or is this still in the realm of imagination? Because this response is going to need you to consider yourself as being part of your business - and that isn't always a consideration when businesses are thought about.

Firstly, whoever you share a business space with needs to be someone you can share a space with. Okay, that sounds kinda dumb - but think of it this way. I'm fiery and erratic - liable to fly into a storm and out again in the space of six minutes. Having two people like me in a small space is likely to be good for the electricity board*, but not for business ;-)

    (*Sparks flying?)

My point is that you two need to be compatible. Someone who is rather slow at decisions but will be able to handle my erratic nature would fit better.

Secondly whatever you do needs to have something in common - or at least not be wholly incompatible - like a leather tanner for example or someone using metal working machinery. They could be a book keeper - they have their side of the shop and keep out of your way, you have yours. When they have clients visiting, you nip out for a coffee ;-) You could hitch up with someone selling books, kitchen wares or practically anything that doesn't make too much noise or dust.

In terms of shared branding - that's another issue altogether. It's also one that would affect your choice of partner. That's when the kind of business you are becomes as important as the business itself. You aren't just a designer - you are a particular kind of designer. In this case gentle, flowing fashions. So your partner needs to share this in some way, if you are to share a common identity that is (which you need not do - you could just nail up a wall between you and call it quits!). They could be into kites, or even surfing (which is sort of light and airy?) Do you see my reasoning here?

Does this help? If not, why not and I can stroll down another avenue.

Now if you'll forgive me it's gone midnight in Paris and it's past my bed time!

As a minimum: compatible personalities and ability to pay their way.
Then: synergy with your target audience (so you can co-market) or at least compatibility (a woman-only clothing store vs. a men's shoe store).
You need to decide if you're simply roommates, or if you want to "date" each others' business.

I think any kind of retail store selling accessories like shoes/ handbags , costume jewelry or even a womens saloon/ nail saloon perhaps. It would be a win-win situation for both businesses I would think. Good Luck!
