How Do We Attract Customers To Our Startup Agency?

Posted by kesteves on 125 Points
A friend and I have 30 years experience each in media sales, marketing, ideas, and finding ways to grow our clients business - as media reps/managers. We'd like to start our own agency. In pitching a potential client, how much of an idea for a campaign do we disclose? Since we'll be using outside sources for things like production how much of a fee do we add on top?
Thanks for your help!

My approach has always been to disclose as much of the approach as possible, but qualify it by saying that it's all tentative until we have an opportunity to deep-dive the situation. It gives the client some insight to how we think and approach the issue, and it lets them know that we really dig in once we have the assignment.

As for the add-on fee, you have to judge each situation on its own. You are still responsible for the final deliverable, so you're entitled to a fair mark-up. But if you get too greedy you may jeopardize the long-term relationship. You might try this: quote the outsourced work at fair-market rates, and ask the supplier to give you a discount as the referral fee. Remember that you are doing the sales job for your suppliers, and that saves them that expense.

I run a business media and events business ..and I have learnt from very expensive mistakes.

Dont disclose much about your campign unless they sign off on an agreed brief. This can be followed by a sign off on an agreed cost. Their reference can be the campaigns you have worked on - which reflects your thinking and approach.

With regards to prodution,,,you need to build your own list of selected vendors and get them to give you competitive rates. And give your clients the market rate.

Media..they should also give you a discount as an agency plus offers. Maybe you can consider buying media in bulk if you have some kind of committment from your clients.

    All the best!
