Youtube Seo Duplicate Content?

Posted by margo.schlossberg on 125 Points
Hi, I have a question with regards to youtube videos. If I transcribe the video but also use the same text on the web page does google see this as duplicate content? I am not really clear on how google sees youtube transcription text? (video would be embedded onto page)

Also- We are a very local auto repair shop and most of our customers are within a 10 mile radius. When tagging the video should we be putting in the census designated local cities (we are on the border of many) or using the larger area terms that youtube suggests since we are also geotagging?

Thank you so much!!!!

If you're not sure, try a couple of examples to understand how the search engines (not just Google) see both your site & videos. If there's a natural reason why the exact text is in both places, then don't worry about it. If you're doing this to improve search engine results, then do your homework.

If your customers are all within 10-mile radius, then definitely mention the local cities. Larger areas may be useful if prospective customers are entering this in their searches. However, with the increase of smart phones/tablets, search engines can "see" where you are, and will provide hyper-local searches. Therefore, make sure that the local cities are mentioned - it'll only help the searchers find you. And if you aren't already, make sure you have listings in various online places, Yelp and Google Places (for example).

From what I can tell, there's no official stance on using your video transcription on your own site. Google doesn't penalize you for embedding the video there, either.

That said, however, seeing as how YouTube's transcriptions are not very accurate (for example, see the transcription of our profile video at https://www.youtube.com/Productiontrax -- it's close, but not really), my recommendation would be to use an accurate transcription on your site (rather than just copying the text over) to avoid any issues altogether. I think you'd get a boost for both original content, and improving the overall user experience for your visitors by accurately transcribing the video on your site.

I know this is closed but.....

Wow...Great Question! I thought I knew the answer, but when I tried to double-check it was next to impossible to find a straight answer. Actually, I never found one.

I did find several reputable places that encourage you to embed your closed caption youtube video on your site along with a transcript. Even YouTube and ReelSeo.com suggest it as a way to add content to your blog or website.

So it seems the consensus is "no". Youtube captions embedded in a Youtube video that is posted above an exact transcript is not considered duplicate content. Again, it is actually encouraged as a way to make your page more useful and accessible.

I would test it out and see for yourself. Just to make sure.

There are some important things to consider, though. Remember that Youtube content and videos link back to Youtube, not your site. If you imbed the Youtube video and transcript on one page, and that transcript is your only content, then you are competing with yourself. Your site content vs. Youtube content. (This may be why it is difficult to find a straight answer)

    Tips from 3PlayMedia.com (among others):

    1) Embed one video per page
    2) Make sure each video page has a unique URL
    3) Create and update a video site map

And according to Phil Nottingham of Distilled, London, there are some important things to consider when posting to Youtube or Vimeo vs hosting your own videos on your server (Wistia is one of the best video hosts for passing the SEO onto you, not them.

In a nutshell - Your videos should be created and hosted based on specific goals:

To build brand awareness and get your name out to as many people as possible: Youtube, Vimeo, Vine, and other video sharing sites.

To build site traffic, leads, and SEO for your business: Self-hosted video is the way to go. Use rich snippet meta data, xml video site maps, and www.schema.org markup. This gives you all the juice, and you dont have to compete with Youtube. www.Wistia.com is an great place to start (no affiliation).
